Pictures of Hawaii | Molokai From Sunrise to Moonrise

Feb 8th, 2008

You asked for it, you got it! We’re dubbing every Friday ‘Aloha Friday Pictures of Hawaii‘ day. We’ll be sure to post pictures of Hawaii at least once every week to share with all of you.

Today, we’ll be taking you from sunrise…to sunset…to moonrise.

Sunrise over Maui

The sunlight peeks up over the top of Maui and plays hide-and-seek with Moloka’i as it reflects off of the water. The photograph below was taken around 6:15 am a few weeks back from the Kaunakakai wharf & harbor.

There are very few days where I wish to get up this early (or this late for some), but the sunrise makes it all worth it (on most days anyway). Morning coffee, the smell of the ocean in the air, and the sunrise…what a great way to start the day!

Glazed Sunset Drenched Sky Over Papohaku

Even on a cloudy day such as seen in the picture below, the sun still manages to set with much grace.

When the sun disappears and the dark sets in on a less cloudy day, you are able to see the city lights of Oahu in the distance. As Moloka’i does not have many lights, the lights from Oahu as well as Maui (which can be seen from the South and East) are fairly outstanding.

Moloka’i Full Moon Rising

Yes, the sunrise and sunset are sights to see. However, the awe of the moonrise should not be underestimated. The picture below was taken at a graduation lu’au in Kawela and makes for a perfect ‘backyard style’ lu’au setting. The coconut tree adds the finishing touch to set the mood for a mellow Hawaii night.

If you focus your attention to the background of the picture just under the moon, you are able to see the twinkling, glowing lights over on Maui.

    1. Hi, blu,

      Nice pictures. I think it’s a good idea to have a weekly gimmick such as your “Friday Aloha Pictures”.. I’ll see if I can do the same to my site.

    2. interesting… a round of local news Friday Pictures… that gives me an idea….

    3. Those are just beautiful!

    4. @Saedel, Tim, and Court

      Thanks for stopping by guys! I’m glad you liked the idea ;)

    5. Thats no gimmick, thats pure entertainment! Good Job!

    6. Oh yea … sunset/sunrise pictures on a blog about Hawaii is definitely a winning combination … great shots. I like the last shot as well … although next time, you might want to wait until the moon is a little higher, blocked a bit by the palm trees … it’s really hard to get any kind of detail in the moon with a long exposure.

      … which reminds me, I really need to get my tripod out and hit the beach one of these nights ;-)

    7. Beautiful site! I love living along the lakeshore of Lake Michigan, but in the middle of February these pictures help take the chill out of the winter storms. I remember visiting Hawaii and missing home. Our summers look a lot like your pictures, minus the palm trees. :-)

      I’ll be back!

    8. Thanks Penn State, I’m glad you like the idea also ;)

      @Todd
      Yeah, the moon blocked a bit by the coconut trees probably would have been a great shot, but we were at a graduation party when this shot was taken and little preoccupied ;) . I’m going to be putting a little more effort as far as photography is concerned in the near future.

      @Lakeshore News
      Thanks for stopping by, and I feel the same way about missing home when I visit the Mainland. :)
