I’ve been following So You Think You Can Dance ever since the first season. If you love dance and can appreciate the different genres and styles of dancing, So You Think You Can Dance is all about the art of dancing and being versatile.
For those of you who don’t know, SYTYCD is a dance competition that airs on FOX on Wednesday and Thursday nights in much the same style that the American Idol contest was laid out…meaning the contestants perform on Wednesday night thereafter the voting process begins. On the next night, the results are announced. The difference is that there are dancers and dance featured instead of singers and singing.
SYTYCD has got almost every popular style of dancing from hip-hop to broadway to ballroom and back again. It’s very interesting to see dancers out of their element, and how they attempt to make a certain choreographed piece their own within the frame of that dance genre.
If you follow So You Think You Can Dance almost religiously as I do, which performance was favorite out of last week’s episode, which happened to be the first episode of the actual Top 20 competition?
I will have to go with Joshua Allen and Katee Shean’s hip-hop routine performance that was done to No Air, the R&B ballad sung by Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown. The dance routine was based on a story of a couple in which the young man is being sent off to war, and the stress it puts on their relationship. The piece was choreographed by newcomers to So You Think You Can Dance Napoleon and Tabitha. Napoleon and Tabitha are hip-hop choreographers.
This season of So You Think You Can Dance is packed with amazing and talented young dancers. One such dancer that is a contestant on So You Think You Can Dance happens to be Hawaii’s own Mark Kanemura. According to what Mark Kanemura said on the live auditions of So You Think You Can Dance, Kanemura is from Salt Lake City, Oahu. My favorite piece done by Mark Kanemura so far has got to be the solo performance that he choreographed himself to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody…very entertaining and somewhat humorous! The movements in his piece was kinda reminiscent to a frog =).
